Why is that blood sugar control become more challenging as we age
As a retail pharmacist, I often see people around me start to struggle with blood sugar control as they get older.
Sometimes I wonder:
Why does blood sugar become harder to control with age?
Many of us eat similar foods, live similar lifestyles, and haven't made any major changes. Yet suddenly, blood sugar readings start creeping up.
So what is actually happening?
After looking deeper into it, I realized that several changes can occur quietly as we age — often without us even noticing.
As we grow older:
✅ Insulin production may gradually decrease
✅ The liver may release more glucose than the body needs
✅ Body cells may become less sensitive to insulin
Over time, these changes can make it harder for glucose to move out of the bloodstream and into the cells where it is needed.
The result?
📈 Blood sugar stays elevated for longer periods after meals
📈 Higher risk of prediabetes
📈 Increased likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes

In the next post, I'll share what you can do to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels as you age.
